Day of the Dead Bread

traditional

1½ c flour

½ c sugar

1 tsp salt

1Tb anise seed

2 packages dry yeast

½ c milk

½ c water

½ c butter

4 eggs

3½-4½ c flour

 

Glaze: ½ c sugar

1/3 c orange juice

2 Tb orange peel, grated

Heat milk, butter, and water in saucepan.  Mix first 5 ingredients.  Add warm liquid, and beat.  Add eggs and 1 more cup of flour, beat.  Gradually blend in remaining flour.  Knead on lightly floured board for 8-10 minutes.  Place dough in greased bowl and let rise until doubled (1.5 hours)  Punch down and make shapes.  Let rise again for 1 hour.  Bake at 350° for 40 minutes. 

Boil glaze ingredients for 2 minutes.  Apply to warm shapes.
